Hawaii Island has thousands of acres planted in eucalyptus.

HIFI is researching and developing projects that would repurpose this resource as a new foundation — a ho’okumu hou — for CO2 sequestration, job creation, and increased island circularity.

Revenues will be used to endow a permanent fund to finance regenerative agriculture, native tree afforestation, and the development of young leaders who can move our community forward.

Current R&D

  • Building Materials

We’re exploring creating cross-laminated timber (CLT) from eucalyptus, with the goal of addressing Hawaii’s housing shortage using locally-sourced materials.

  • Biochar

HIFI is investigating turning eucalyptus on the Big Island into biochar, which is a method for sequestering carbon in soils.
